WinZip is the standard for compressing files and combining multiple files into one file. Although Windows XP will decompress zip files, WinZip does is more user friendly once you use it a few times. The best part of WinZip is the right click, add to zip file option for quickly zipping up your files.
WinZip also comes with a feature to make a self extracting .exe file so you don't need an unzipping program to extract the zip file contents.
WinZip will allow you to use it for free if you don't mind looking at a splash screen and clicking an I agree button each time you use it. It's a good deal at only $29.
A less popular alternative to WinZip is WinRAR. Win RAR will open zip files along with many other compressed file types, some of which WinZip won't open. It can also make its own type of compressed files known as RAR files. WinRAR can often compress files smaller than WinZip and also has the same right click interface. It will cost you $29 to buy.
