WinZip

WinZip is the standard for compressing files and combining multiple files into one file. Although Windows XP will decompress zip files, WinZip does is more user friendly once you use it a few times. The best part of WinZip is the right click, add to zip file option for quickly zipping up your files.

 

WinZip also comes with a feature to make a self extracting .exe file so you don’t need an unzipping program to extract the zip file contents.

WinZip will allow you to use it for free if you don’t mind looking at a splash screen and clicking an I agree button each time you use it. It’s a good deal at only $29.

WinRAR

A less popular alternative to WinZip is WinRAR. Win RAR will open zip files along with many other compressed file types, some of which WinZip won’t open. It can also make its own type of compressed files known as RAR files. WinRAR can often compress files smaller than WinZip and also has the same right click interface. It will cost you $29 to buy.

CryptCD

Have you ever wanted to encrypt the data on a CD to protect it from prying eyes? CryptCD will let you password protect the contents of your CD and also uses its own format for storing the data. It offers a friendly interface similar to Windows Explorer.

Once the files are burned to the CD the user can place it in the CD-ROM drive and it will autorun and ask for the password and display the files.

The shareware version will only allow you to burn a certain amount of data to the CD. The full version cost you $29.95 for the home version.

TextPad

Most people use Windows Notepad or Wordpad to open text (.txt) files. You can also use Microsoft Word to open text files. But if you try to open a file that is too large you will end up crashing the program or the computer itself. TextPad is designed to open large text files and also allows you to search and change them. You can use it for free if you dont mind looking at a splash screen for about ten seconds every time you open a document. If you would like to buy TextPad it will run you $30.

DBF Viewer 2000

DBF Viewer 2000 is a powerful, compact and easy-to-use viewer and editor for DBF files (Clipper, dBase, FoxBase, Foxpro, Visual Foxpro, Visual DBase, VO, DB2K...). You can view, edit, sort, use query by example, delete duplicates, create, print dbf file and export the data from them to a variety of formats (DBF, TXT, CSV, Excel, HTML, XML, PRG, SQL) without using any other software packages. It has a limited trial period and then after that it will cost you $39.95 to buy.

Alcohol 120%
