Hardware Questions and Answers - How to Free Up Space on C Drive

Alan writes in with a hardware question
Q. My internal hard drive is full and I want to use my external drive as my main drive. I can't download the latest version of iTunes as it says there isn't enough space on my c drive.

A. Although it is possible to have an external drive be your main system drive, its not the way to go. It will take some work to set it up assuming your computer will even allow you to boot from a USB drive. Plus it will be slower. One option is to take the actual drive out of the USB case and swap it with your internal drive that you are using now. Or you can add it to your computer as the system drive and use your current system drive as a backup or storage drive.

If you do this then you will have to reinstall Windows and all your programs on the new drive and make sure that your computer boots to the new drive and not the old one. One way to do this would be to take out the full drive while setting up the new drive. Then you can add it back as a secondary drive and copy your documents and music etc over to the new drive or leave them on the old drive.

Another option is to put the new drive as a second drive and store your documents and music on that one and get them off the full drive to free up space. You can also uninstall programs off your full drive and reinstall them on the new drive to free up space as well. Doing a cleanup of your computer may get you back quite a bit of space if you haven't done it in awhile.
