Hardware Questions and Answers - DVD Drive Disappeared

Billy writes in with a hardware question:
Q. My DVD Rom Drive and CD Burner have stopped working. When I went under My Computer the E:\ Drive for DVD and F:\ Drive for the CD Burner is no longer there. How can I restore them without losing everything saved on my PC because I can not make any back up disc.

A. First I will ask if you have Nero installed? If so there is a bug in Nero that will cause this problem. Try uninstalling it and rebooting to see if it comes back.

Or you can try this registry edit to see if it solves the problem. Make sure to backup the registry first and do this at your own risk since editing the registry can render your computer useless and you will have to reinstall Windows.

1. Click on Start then click on Run
2. Enter regedit and click Ok
3. Open up the following folders:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. Within {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
Upperfilters and Lowerfilters
Click on each of them, press delete and click Yes.
5. Close regedit & restart your computer

Since you have Windows 98 you can try adding this line to your config.sys file
Lastdrive=D

Click on Start, Run and then type in sysedit and click ok to bring up your system files which includes config.sys

You can also go into Device Manger and see if its listed there. If so try right clicking it and removing it and then reboot and see if it comes back.
