Hardware Questions and Answers - PC Beeps and Will Not Boot

Sachin writes in with a hardware question:
Q. My computer does not boot when powered on, only generating continuous beep sound in regular intervals of few seconds from the CPU.

A. A continuous repeating beep may mean a faulty motherboard or power supply depending on what motherboard/BIOS your computer is running. You can try to replace the power supply first since it is cheaper and easier than trying the motherboard.

If that doesn't work then you may be looking at a faulty motherboard. If you replace the motherboard keep in mind that you will have to do a repair installation of Windows BEFORE starting the computer if the motherboard is different or has a different chipset than the original. If you are not comfortable with this you may want to take it to a shop for a diagnosis.
