Q. Any CD that is put into the CDROM drive turns the system off. What is the problem?
A. Here are a couple of things you can try to troubleshoot your problem. First you should try and narrow it down to a hardware or software problem. I would boot into Safe Mode and then try to access your CDROM to see if it does the same thing. If so then it looks like it may be a hardware issue. If not then you may have some conflicting software running on your computer that doesn't like your CDROM.
If it works in Safe Mode then you can disable unnecessary startup items using msconfig, reboot and try it again.
The next thing you can try is to put your CDROM on another IDE cable besides the one the hard drive is on. Open the case and make and see if the hard drive and CDROM are on the same cable. If so, put the CDROM on the secondary IDE port. You may have to get another IDE cable if you only have the one. Make sure to set your jumpers correctly. You can also try another CDROM drive for a quick answer. They are pretty cheap and easy to install. Its very similar to installing a hard drive.
