Hardware Questions and Answers - PC Won't Boot After New RAM Installed

Robin writes in with a hardware question.
Q. I had replaced the RAM card with more RAM.  When i go to turn CPU on there is 3 short beeps, then the monitor makes a sound like it is starting then it turns off.  I have to pull the power cord out of CPU to turn the computer off.  Can you help?

A. Beep codes usually tell you that there is something wrong with your configuration or hardware. They will vary depending on the manufacture of your motherboard. Did you make sure you have the same type/speed RAM as the old memory? It should say something like PC2100 or PC133 on it and match the existing RAM. You should also check to make sure you didn't go over the limit your motherboard can accept. Finally you can try installing just the new memory by itself to make sure that it works and is not defective.
