Hardware Questions and Answers - PC Won't Start When Power Button Pressed

Frank writes in with a hardware question
Q. My computer will not start when i push the button the first time it will come on with the fans but nothing else. If I hit the reset button then it starts usually. Also every once in awhile it will just crash. I just replaced the power supply so i have ruled that out. Any ideas?

A. It sounds as if your motherboard may be going bad. When you press the power button it activates the power supply and fans and most likely the hard drive and CDROM as well since they are all connected to the power supply. The power supply plugs into the motherboard to provide power so if there is a problem with the motherboard then it may not start the computer even if you hit the power button. If the CPU and RAM etc are not getting power then your computer will not start. Pressing the reset button may get things going eventually. If possible you may want to have your motherboard tested at a reputable computer shop.
