Hardware Questions and Answers - Saving Pictures Off of Old Computer

Robin writes in with a hardware question
Q. We have a computer bought in approx. 1999 and have downloaded many pictures onto it. We have been holding on to the computer due to the fact that these pictures are on it and we don't know how to remove them. We are wondering how to get the pics off the computer? We have tried a flash drive, but the computer is too old to read the flash drive. What can we do? We now have an Apple, however the pics on the old computer are JPEG files. Thank you for any assistance!

A. There are flash drives available that come with drivers to make it support Windows 98. I would look for a brand that comes with software drivers on a CD.

Another option to back up your pictures is to get an external USB hard drive. That way you can copy all your pictures etc to the hard drive and then attach the hard drive to your new computer and copy the pictures over there. Plus it can serve as a backup in case something happens to the new computer.

There is also an option to install an internal or attach an external CD burner to your computer and burn the pictures to disk. Then you can put the CD in your new computer and copy them and its another way to have a backup of your pictures.

Your new Apple computer should open the jpeg files just fine. Jpeg pictures are not Windows specific.
