What is a web browser cookie? - Common Computer Questions

Question: What is a web browser Cookie?

Answer: A cookie is a small file that is placed on your computer by a website which contains a unique ID tag. The website that put it there also saves a file with a matching ID tag. This file stores information such as where you went on the site or any information you may have entered on the site such as an address form. When you go back to that same site later on, it will know you are by matching the cookie on your computer with the information in its database. The name cookie comes from the UNIX operating system objects called magic cookies which are tokens that are attached to a user or program and change depending on the areas entered by the user or program. You can remove these cookies from your browser by simply deleting your browser history.
