Networking Questions and Answers - How to Use Wake on Lan

Adam writes in with a networking question:
Question:
Please can you advise what application I can use to make use of the Wake on LAN functionality of the machines? Basically, I want to be able to remotely turn PCs on but I cannot find an application that does this. Please can you help? Thanks in advance.

Answer: In order to use the functionality of WOL you need to make sure you have a few things covered. First your motherboard must support it and have a the 3 pin WOL adapter. The network card must also support this feature. It must also be enabled in the BIOS. Here is a really good article explain how it works.

There are many WOL software applications available. Here is a link to a free one that you can try out for yourself.
