Networking Questions and Answers - Networking Windows ME and XP

Graham writes in with a networking question:
Q. I have a main computer running XP and a networked computer running Millennium. From the Millennium computer I can access the XP computer but when i try to access the Millennium computer from the XP computer it asks for a password. How do I find the password and/or change it?

A. This may be a case of the ME computer not having the user information required to allow access over the network. ME is not the best when it comes to networking compared to 2000 and XP.

What you can try is to try is to add the Windows XP username that you log on to the XP computer with to the ME computer. On the ME computer go to Control Panel and then users and then create a user with the same name and password as the XP user that you log onto your XP computer with.

Another option is if you know the administrator password for the ME computer you can type that in with administrator for the username when you are prompted on the XP computer. If you do it this way then you may have to enter it each time you reconnect to the ME computer. But if the ME computer has the username/password from the XP computer in the system it will use that to grant access each time.
