Bob writes in with a networking question
Q. I have a laptop pc and want to use a wireless connection. How can I set it up so my computer can’t be read by other people? Or my IP address sent out. Not sure what I am asking but I want to be sure I will be as safe as possible. Thanks so much. Bob
A. To setup wireless security you will need a wireless router to connect to your DSL or Cable modem. The router will have built in security features such as WEP and WPA security keys. I would use WPA if you have a newer computer which most likely supports it. You will connect to the router and setup a password for your wireless connection. You should also change the router default password for more security. I would also change the SSID so you know which connection is yours in case your neighbors use wireless as well.
I would connect to the router using a network cable for the initial setup. You will either run the installation software which will guide you step by step through the process or you can enter the routers IP address in your web browser to bypass this. If you are new to wireless I would use the software that comes with the router since it will explain exactly what to do and show illustrations. It should take you through the process of setting up the wireless security key. If you have the option remember to use WPA over WEP. After that you should be ready to go and have a secure wireless connection. Router brands such as Netgear, Belkin and Lynksys seem to work well.
