Question:I am trying to install ADSL. Everything is connected properly and the techs at the providers end says everything else ok, but we can only get onto Westpac online banking and my email!!! everything else just comes up as this page cannot be displayed, the same thing happened when we had dial up. Can anyone help me there must be something in my pc setup or something? Please help.
Answer: Do you have any firewall software installed such as Norton Internet Security or McAfee Firewall? If so then try to disable it and see if that helps. I would also check the security settings of Internet Explorer to make sure its not set too high or blocking any sites.
Next you can try to ping a website which will test connectivity to the site. Some sites don't allow you to do so but Google will. Open up a command prompt by going to Start, Run and typing in cmd and clicking Ok. Then type in ping www.google.com and see if you get 4 replies. If so then you have a good connection but something is blocking your web browser.
Try to boot into Safe Mode With Network Support and see if you can connect that way. If so then there may be something running in normal mode that is blocking your access such as a firewall or spyware.
You can also install another web browser such as Firefox and see if you can connect with that. You can download it on another computer and then copy it over and install it on yours.
