Networking Questions and Answers - How to Get Your IP Address Back

Luis writes in with a networking question
Q. I released the IP address from my PC at the office by mistake! It's gone! This PC is part of a network. How can I get it back? Can I do it myself? Or do I need to contact IT. THANKS!

A. If your computer is set to get an IP address automatically then all you need to do is have it renew the IP address. From a command prompt you can type in ipconfig /renew and it will look for a DHCP server and get a new IP address. If you have a Local Area Connection in your system tray by the clock you can double click that to bring up its status and click the Support tab and then the Repair button. This will do the release/renew process for you.
