Q. I have 2 computers networked. Both computers were running now & both have successfully browsed the internet. But when I trying to share files on those computers it does not work and give the message \\192.168.0.5 - The network path was not found. Besides, the main thing is that both computers can ping each other. How can I solve this problem.
A. I would begin by making sure you have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed. You can right click your network connection, choose Properties and see if it’s listed under the General tab. I would also disable Windows Firewall or any other firewall software you have as a test until you can narrow down the problem. You may have to make a rule to allow network browsing or in the case of the Windows Firewall make sure that File and Printer Sharing is checked under the Exceptions tab.
Also make sure the Routing and Remote Access service is not running since that can cause the error too. Another thing to check is to make sure that both computers are on the same subnet such as 192.168.0.5 and 192.168.0.6 where the numbers will be the same except for the last octet (number) in the address. Then make sure that both computers are in the same workgroup. You can right click My Computer, choose Properties and go to the Computer Name tab to check this.
