Networking Questions and Answers - Cat 5 or RF For Connection to Router?

Eliot writes in with a networking question
Question:It is 75' from my router to my PC (for streaming video to TV). Which is preferable? Cat 5 under the house (no problem installing) or wide band RF? Isn't cable less trouble prone? Rebooting etc? Thank you

Answer: Cat5 would be preferable for the sake of reliability and speed over RF. The only thing you need to worry about is keeping it away from any sources that will cause interference (crosstalk). This may not be an issue since it's under the house compared to in the ceiling where you can have problems with things such as light fixtures and A/C units. If it's outside then you may want to be concerned about moisture over time if it's exposed. Cat 5 has a limit of 300 feet before the signal has to be strengthened so 75 feet should be just fine.
