Networking Questions and Answers - How to Expand Office Network

Ammarao writes in with a networking question
Question: In my office network I have connected 5 PCs through a router. I want to expand the network with another 5 PCs but I don’t have a switch. I have a DSL modem. Can the DSL modem be used as a switch or not?

Answer: If you want to expand your network connection and include Internet access through your DSL modem then you can buy a switch and connect it to your DSL router through one of the switch ports on the back of the router. Then you can run your computers off of the switch for network connectivity and the DSL signal will be sent through the switch as well. You can get a 16 port switch pretty cheap and that will give cover your 10 computers and give you room for some growth.
