Lock Your Workstation With a Click of the Mouse

If you want to leave your computer running but don’t want others to be able to access it while you are away from your desk you have the ability to lock it. To unlock your computer you simple enter your password assuming you have one assigned to your user account.

To lock your computer you would normally press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then have to click on Lock Workstation or click on Start and Log Off depending on how your computer is setup. There is a way to make a shortcut on your desktop or anywhere else that will allow you to lock your computer just by clicking on it.

To make this shortcut, right click on your desktop and click New and then Shortcut. In the box that says Type the location of the item you would enter rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation. Then click on Next and give the shortcut a name such as Lock Workstation and then click on Finish. Then all you need to do is double click it to lock your computer!

If you don’t want to go through all that hassle you can download the shortcut here.

This will work on Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Important Windows and Office patches: Back to the Top

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-012 for Office 2000-2003

On certain versions of Office, if a user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the client workstation. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

Learning about file extensions

Mike writes in with a Windows question:
Q. Often, when I get an email with an attachment, I cannot open the attachment.  I get the message that Windows cannot open the attachment without knowing the program that created it.  My question is what do you do when you find the program that created it?  Please advise.  Thanks, Mike

A. Windows uses file extensions to determine what program to open what type of file with. For example if you have a Word document called resume.doc then the .doc on the end tells Windows to use Microsoft Word to open the document. If you don't have Word installed on your computer and you try to open a .doc file then Windows doesn't know what to do with it and will ask you what program you want to open the file with. If you don't see the last three letters after the name of the file like .doc or .jpg then you need to enable Windows to display them. Keep in mind that just because you tell Windows to open a certain file type with a certain program that it will actually open it correctly.

To find out what program is associated with what file you can check several sites online that will tell you such as http://filext.com/ or http://www.file-ext.com/r.html
