Important Windows security update alert

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-017
Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution (925902)

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that Windows handles cursor, animated cursor, and icon formats. An attacker could try to exploit the vulnerability by constructing a malicious cursor or icon file that could potentially allow remote code execution if a user visited a malicious Web site or viewed a specially crafted e-mail message. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system.

Affected systems: Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista

If you have Windows Updates enabled and functioning properly you should get the update/patch installed automatically. If not or if you want to install it manually just to be sure you can visit the Microsoft site and download the update.

More Important Microsoft patches and fixes coming up

Microsoft plans to release five more sets of patches this month, fixing critical flaws in Windows and the Microsoft Content Management Server. The April 10 patches will come as part of Microsoft's regular monthly patch release process.

Four of next week's updates will fix flaws in Windows, Microsoft said in a note published on its Web site Thursday. The most serious of these flaws is rated "critical," Microsoft's most severe rating.

Non-security updates will also be released on Microsoft's various automatic update services and, as usual, the company will refresh its Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Readers Question of the Month: Back to the Top
Unwanted Software Installation

Valentin writes in with a troubleshooting question
Q. When I turn my PC the screen comes on with a window called PhotoGallery and is asking for instalation CD which I have no idea that I installed it before. When i try to install other programs it says other instalation is running - finish it first to contuniue with the other. Can you please tell me how to get rid of this window?

A. PhotoGallery may be a program that came with your HP printer. If you have an HP printer, put the CD that came with it in the drive and see if it will finish the installation off of the CD. Microsoft Office also has a PhotoGallery program. You may want to put your Office CD in the drive if you have one and see what that does.

Another method is to try and stop the installer from running when your computer starts. Check your startup items using msconfig and uncheck anything related to PhotoGallery or HP and restart the computer when prompted.

You can also try the Windows Cleanup Utility and see if it shows up in the list and if so then remove it that way.

First iPod Virus Detected

Kaspersky Lab on Thursday said it has discovered the first virus designed to infect iPods. The virus, dubbed Podloso, does not pose a real threat.

Kaspersky states that the virus will only work if Linux has been installed on an iPod. Also, the user has to load the virus onto the iPod. "Podloso cannot be launched automatically without user involvement," the company said.

Once launched, Podloso will scan the iPod's hard disk and infect all executable files. Any attempt to launch these files will cause the virus to display: "You are infected with Oslo the first iPodLinux Virus".
