Sasser Worm

The Sasser worm (W32.Sasser.A and its variants) targets a security issue with the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) that Microsoft addressed with a released security update. Sasser targets computers with out-of-date software, and those computers remain at risk of infection until the update is installed. We recommend that customers install the update from Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-011 to help protect against this malicious software.

The next standard in wireless technology: MIMO

MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output, pronounced my-mo) is a wireless technology designed to boost wireless bandwidth and range by taking advantage of multiplexing. MIMO uses algorithms in a radio chipset to send information out over two or more antennas. The radio signals then reflect off various objects in the environment to create multiple paths used to carry more information. This information is then recombined on the receiving side by the MIMO algorithms. Current 802.11g technologies use single transmitting and dual receiving antennas, MIMO utilizes multiple transmitting antennas. MIMO uses the additional pathways provided by the multiple antennas to transmit more information and then recombines the signal on the receiving end.

MIMO provides improvements in wireless LAN (WLAN) throughput, range and reliability that will broaden the usefulness of wireless for applications and allow for more throughput intensive applications to run over wireless. Airgo's MIMO chip set implementation transmits two distinct datastreams simultaneously at 54Mbps totaling 108Mbps (Airgo is a MIMO chip manufacturer).

Eventually there should be an IEEE 802.11n standard for MIMO which promises to push wireless network data rates well above the 100Mbps mark which will hopefully fill those wireless dead spots most people experience around their home and office wireless network.

Of course a new technology requires new (more expensive) hardware. Unfortunately different manufactures products may not necessarily work together with each other. Both wireless adapters and access points may have to be the same brand. Also, the best results are obtained with a true MIMO implementation on both ends of the connection. "True MIMO" requires multiple antennas and radios on both the transmitting and receive sides of the link. Expect MIMO hardware to be more expensive at least in the beginning of its rise (or fall) to glory.

Pesky and expensive spyware infection

Mary Ann writes in with a spyware question:
Q. Every time I get online, something redirects my home page. I can't go to links thru email, etc. I took my computer to a shop. They wanted $275.00 to remove 115 spywares off.
Microsoft antispyware, nor adaware, can detect. How can I do this myself without completely erasing hard drive and reinstalling? (Which I'm not sure how to do without a floppy drive anyway!)
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Mary ann

A. For the most part spyware is not too hard to get rid of. There are a few of them that are really hard to get rid of and you usually end up doing a format and starting over. Did you check out our spyware page for help and to download Spybot and CWShredder? These are also free like the Microsoft program and AdAware.

Be sure to check your startup items too (msconfig) to make sure there is nothing that seems out of place. Its better to do the spyware scans in safe mode as well. Make sure you update the programs like Spybot and AdAware before running them.

Safe Mode

Msconfig

You should also check your Add/Remove programs too see if there are any items in there that don't belong and remove them as well.

Here is how you change your home page in Internet Explorer.

Check out this page for how to fix your broken links in e-mail and Internet Explorer.

If you do end up formatting you do not need a floppy drive. As long as you have your Windows XP CD or a recovery CD then you can boot with it and reinstall from there. If you have never done it I don't recommend doing it yourself.

Microsoft cracks down on software piracy

Microsoft announced this week that it has begun to widen the scope of its Windows Genuine Advantage program to include checks for the authenticity of Microsoft Office software. The program is already in place for Microsoft Windows.

Since the its launch in 2005, Windows users have had the option to register for the WGA program if they wanted to receive automatic security updates and other free goodies from Microsoft's site.

Those who have not validated their software through WGA will not be able to download Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Defender, among other applications.
