Make your folders private on a multiple user Windows XP computer

If you have more than one user on your Windows XP computer then you can make you personal folders private so only you can see them. This will only apply to the My Documents, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites folders and their subfolders. You will have to be using the NTFS file system to be able to make your folders private.

Here is how you do it:

  • Open My Computer or Windows Explorer
  • Double click your C drive.
  • If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.
  • Double click the Documents and Settings folder.
  • Double click your user folder. It will be named the same as your user login name.
  • Right click any folder in your user profile, and click Properties.
  • On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-028
Buffer Overrun in JPEG Processing (GDI+) Could Allow Code Execution

This is an older update but it needs to be installed manually so if you missed it when it came out now is a good time to do it. If you have installed any of the affected programs or affected components listed in this bulletin, you should install the required security update for each of the affected programs or affected components. This may require the installation of multiple security updates. If a user is logged on with administrator privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. This update affects various Windows, Office and other Microsoft Programs. Click here to download and install the updates you need.

How to speed up your computer's boot time

Q. I was wondering how I speed up my computer when it is booting up?

A. There are a few things you can do to speed up your computers boot time. If its just a case of slow/old hardware then it will boot slow no matter what you try but here are a couple of suggestions.

First you can make sure that you don’t have any unnecessary programs loading when you start Windows. You can check your startup items using msconfig to uncheck programs and services that you don’t need or want to start with the computer. You can also go to the BOOT.INI tab and change the timeout setting to 3 seconds or so if its set to 30.

You can also keep your system clean by removing temporary files and temporary internet files.

Another thing you can do is to delete the items in your delete the contents of your C:\Windows\prefetch folder. The prefetch folder is used to help speed up the loading of programs by loading programs it thinks you might need. Its supposed to make your computer start faster by can actually slow it down. You can delete the contents of this folder as often as you like.

It’s always a good idea to keep your hard drive defragmented as well.

You can also go into the BIOS and make sure your hard drive is the first device in your boot order. There may be an option to enable Quick Boot as well. This feature will allow you to turn off some of the tests the system runs when booting. Be careful when changing settings in the BIOS because you can make your computer inoperable.

If you have hundreds of fonts on your computer that could make it take longer to boot. 200 or so is a good number to have. You can remove them by going to Control Panel and then fonts. Keep in mind that if you remove them you won’t be able to use them anymore with you programs and any documents that used the fonts will not display the type using that font anymore.

Hidden Cell Phone Secrets

Experts warn that giving away your old cell phone may mean you are giving away your personal information as well.

Even though you may erase the contents of your cell phone before getting rid of it doesn’t mean the information is gone for good. Hackers using specialized yet inexpensive software found on the Internet can easily get to your “erased” information.

If you want to store information on your phone you should use flash a memory card if your phone comes with one.

Helpful security tips:

  • Set a hard-to-guess password for your cell phone
  • Keep important data on an external memory card that can be removed
  • Before you get rid of your phone ask your wireless carrier and the phone's manufacturer how to wipe off personal information so it can't be recovered.
  • Back up any personal information on your phone to your computer, in case your phone is lost or stolen
