When you install Microsoft Office 2003 on a computer running Windows XP, you may receive an error message like the following:
ERROR 1921 Service 'MDM' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services.
This error occurs when the Machine Debug Manager service is not set to start automatically.
To resolve this issue, you need to make the Machine Debug Manager service start automatically. After that you need to restart the service and run the Office 2003 Setup program again.
To make the Machine Debug Manager service start automatically do the following:
1. Click on Start then Run and type MMC in the Open box, and then click Ok.
2. Click File, then Add/Remove Snap-in, then Add on the Standalone tab, and then click Ok.
3. In the Available Standalone Snap-ins box, click Services, and then click Add.
4. Click to select Local computer in the This snap-in will always manage box, and then click Finish.
5. Click Close, and then click Ok.
6. In the Services snapin, expand Services.
7. In the list of Services, right click the Machine Debug Manager service, and click Properties.
8. On the General tab, click Automatic in the Startup type box, and then click OK.
9. Right click the Machine Debug Manager service, and then click Restart.
After you follow these steps, you can install Office 2003.
