Sandra writes in with an Office question
Question:After installing Microsoft Word 2007, my spell check in Outlook Express in the English version quit working. Only the French version works. Any suggestions?
Answer: I would first check your Outlook Express settings under Tools, Options and then the spelling tab. You may get lucky and be able to change the language back to English. Even if its there it still may not work though.
This issue can be caused by installing Office 2007 after previously having Office 2003 on your computer. Office 2007s spell checker is not compatible with Outlook Express which uses the Office proofing tools for its spell checking.
If you have the Office 2003 CDs you can install only the proofing tools and disable all the other programs such as Word and Excel so they are not installed. This should bring back the spell checker to your Outlook Express. Put in the Office 2003 CD and do a custom installation and only pick proofing tools from the list. It may be under Office Shared Features. Make sure everything else is disabled. There may be a couple of things that you can’t disable but it’s ok.
Another method is to open Word 2007 and click on the Office button (top left). Then click on Word Options on the bottom and then Add-Ins on the left. Then on the very bottom under Manage choose Disabled Items and then click on Go. See if your spell checker is listed there and see if you can enable it.
