What is Needed to Upgrade My Computer? - PC Hardware Questions & Answers

Lou writes in with a hardware question

Question:
I want to upgrade my HP Pavilion x1878 and I know we need a new motherboard, but what else?

Answer: With computers being so cheap now you may be better off just getting a new one. If you get a new motherboard then you will most likely have to buy a new processor and RAM that will work with the newer type of board. Then you need to make sure it has the right connections for your hard drive and things like video, sound and network card unless you use the built in features of the new motherboard. You will also most likely have to do a repair installation of Windows to get it to recognize the new hardware or else the computer may not start at all.
