Computer Shuts Down When Using CDROM - PC Hardware Questions & Answers

Doreen writes in with a hardware question:

Question:
When we try and play games on the CD disk drive we play for only about 10 minutes and it shuts the computer down, It is only when we us the disk drive that it does that. Anything you could do to help would be great.

Answer: The first thing I would do is try another game that uses a CD or maybe even playing music from a CD. That way you can test to see if its the game itself, the CD that belongs to the game or the drive that is causing the problem. If it does the same thing with other games or music CDs then it may be the drive.

If it is the drive you can try a few things if you feel comfortable opening the case. You can us a different power cable to test the one in use. You should have extras available. You can also get a new ribbon cable to test that. And finally you can replace the drive itself. If its not the CD or the game its most likely going to be the drive rather than the cables. They are only around $25 or so for a basic drive. CD burners will be a little more. Its only 4 screws and 2-3 cables and should take a first timer a half hour or so.
