ASUS ACPI Program Causes Computer to Hang - PC Hardware Questions & Answers

James writes in with a hardware question

Question:
Why does the program ASUS ACPI cause my computer to hang?

Answer: The ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is a power management specification that allows the operating system to control the amount of power distributed to the computer's devices.  Devices not in use can be turned off, reducing unnecessary power expenditure. ASUS is most likely the brand of motherboard in your computer. It appears that it is starting some sort of program or service with Windows that may be related to power management. It may not be compatible with Vista. There is a good chance that it is something that is not needed and can be disabled. I would check your startup items and services using msconfig and see if it is listed there and uncheck it.
