Looking For a Better Video Card - PC Hardware Questions & Answers

Brian writes in with a Windows question

Question:
I have a VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP 64MB video card. What would be a card I could replace this with? I have a HP Pavilion a800n with AMD Athlon 3200 2.2 processor. I need a card that supports resolution of 1440x900.

Answer: First you need to find out what type of video slot your computer has. You may have to open the case if you don't have any documentation on the computer. It's most likely an AGP slot but there are different types of AGP slots. It looks like you have an AGP 8x/4x according to the HP page for your computer.

You should be able find a card that supports 1440x900 pretty easily. They will say on the box what resolutions they support. Just make sure your monitor will support the same resolution. Nvidia and ATI make good chipsets so that is one way to go. It will all depend on how much money you want to spend. You should be able to get a video card with 256-512 MB of RAM on it for under $100.
