How to Clean Your Computer - PC Hardware Questions & Answers

Jim writes in with a hardware question

Question:
One question that I always wondered about is cleaning your computer. I am due to take the cover off soon and take some compressed air to it. Is it better to take it in the basement or somewhere where there is a concrete or linoleum floor rather than do it here on carpeting? I never opened it up before on my own because I was always nervous that I would fry something and ruin it and how god I should clean it. Thanks.

Answer: Always make sure the power is off and the computer is unplugged before taking off the cover. I would take it in the garage or outside to blow it out otherwise you may make a mess inside depending on how dirty it is. When blowing it out make sure the can is upright and that it doesn't start to spray and liquid from the condensation. Other than that its a pretty safe procedure. If you are using compressed air in a can that is fine but I would advise against using something like an air compressor since it may blow too hard.
