Software Questions and Answers - How to Clean Up Your Hard Drive

Sue writes in with a software question
Q. How do I clean up my hard drive, I’m not computer smart and don't want to screw it all up.

A. If you are not running out of room then you can do a basic cleanup to get rid of unneeded temp files etc. To check your hard drive, double click My Computer. Then find your C drive and right click it and select Properties. It will show you how much used and free space you have left. If you have over 3 GB of free space then you should be ok for awhile. If not then you can do the basic cleanup and uninstall some programs or remove files such as music or pictures which may take up a lot of space if you have many files.

For the basic cleanup we recommend using Ccleaner. It’s a free and easy to use program that you can download, install and run. Just be sure to read the article on it first.

If you don't feel comfortable installing software then you can use the built in Windows cleanup utility although it doesn't do nearly as good a job as Ccleaner.
