Files Disappear After Being Downloaded
Rosie writes in with a software question
Question: I'm having problems trying to download files from the internet.
I am able to click on the links and the files download onto the computer, however, as soon as the download is fully finished, the file disappears and cannot be found again.
I have had this problem for around 3-4 weeks, and it occurs with everything from music, videos and image files to software downloads such as Mozilla Firefox.
The internet browser I use also has no effect. Mozilla Firefox has always been my default and usual browser, yet I still have the same problem on Internet Explorer. I tried deleting Firefox to re-download, but I could not open the installation file.
I have already tried a few things - I deleted all of my anti-viral software, took off all computer controls and using different browsers, but to no effect.
What else could I do to try and download my files and use them?
Answer: Since you have the same problem in more than one browser its most likely not browser related. It may be that Windows is trying to protect your computer from downloaded files. If you are running Windows Vista or 7 then try to turn off User Account Control.
Another test would be to log in with a different user if you have more than one and see if its related to your user account. You can always make a test user or enable the Administrator account.
Doing a system restore back to a point before this was happening may be another solution that can work.
You may also want to try to boot into Safe Mode with networking to see if you have the same issue. If not then it can be a virus or spyware infection causing the problem since they are less likely to affect your computer in Safe Mode.
