Spyware Questions and Answers - Online Videos and Applications Freeze Computer
Kandis writes in with a spyware question
Question:I have a laptop with windows 7 and I have AVG 9.0 virus protection but recently I can't play videos, whether it is on YouTube, or my media player. I also can't use any apps (such as those on Facebook or something), it simply freezes up and a pop up comes up that says "____ is not responding" and then closes... so would it be a virus that AVG didn't detect or something else? Can you help me?? Please and thank you.
Answer: It can be anything from a virus, spyware, file corruption or program running in the background that can be causing your issue. I would first try a different web browser such as Firefox to see if its browser specific.
Spyware is more of a problem than viruses for most people these days but there are many free and effective programs like Malwarebyte's, Spybot and AdAware that you can download and run on your system.
Another thing I would do is to use the Windows System Configuration Utility (msconfig) and uncheck/disable any programs or services you don’t need to have running when your computer starts. If you don't know what something is you should leave it checked or search for it online to figure out if you need it running or not. For most people you can uncheck most items under the startup tab and also many services since these can run in the background and cause problems and use up your resources making your computer slower.
You can also try going into Safe Mode with Networking assuming you have broadband internet and then going online to see if you still have the same problems. If it works fine that way then that will tell you its probably a spyware or startup item issue.
