Troubleshooting Questions and Answers - Can't Open CD Backups

Joseph writes in with a troubleshooting question.
Q. I have many CD's that I downloaded from my windows 98 (they were pictures-data and music CDs). I bought a new dell computer (Windows XP) and updated my old Dell 98 to windows Home Edition. NOW neither computer will open (or recognize) the CDs that I downloaded from my Windows 98. What can I do?

A. There is a chance that the file system used to burn your CDs in Windows 98 may not be supported by Windows XP. CDs can be burned with different file systems to be used with different operating systems. If you used the RockRidge files system for example then it most likely wont work with Windows XP.

What you can do is open the CDs on your old Windows 98 computer or another 98 or maybe ME computer and transfer your files to a removable hard drive, USB thumb drive or try using a different program to burn the CDs again. You may have an option in your burning software to select what type of file system to use. Joliet should work fine for Windows XP.
