Troubleshooting Questions and Answers - Computer Shuts Off With Lsass.exe Error

Alana writes in with a troubleshooting question
Q. My IBM laptop shuts down after 8 minutes saying Isass.exe error. What can I do? The computer comes back on, but has the same problem over and over.

A. This error may be caused by a virus or spyware infection. That message is commonly caused by the Sasser Worm. I would run the Sasser removal tool from Symantec and see if it finds it on your system. I would also run some other virus and spyware scans to see what else you may have on your computer. Here is a link to the Sasser removal tool.

To prevent your computer from restarting you can click on Start, Run and then type in shutdown -a to abort the shutdown. Or you can boot into Safe Mode with Network support to see if that will allow the computer to stay running and still give you access to your broadband internet connection. Or you can download the removal tool, then boot into Safe Mode and run it.

While in Safe Mode you should run some other virus and spyware scans. You can start with Spybot, AdAware, Malwarebytes and AVG since they are free.
