Virus Questions and Answers - Computer Freezes After Trojan Removal
Thaddeus writes in with a virus question
Question: I recently removed a trojan and some adware with AVG and some adware removal prog from download.com but now when I reboot, I’m frozen right before I get to the login screen. What are my options? My hp came with an app/driver recovery DVD...how do I boot that from disk? Or is it possible....Thanks, T
Answer: Try booting into Safe Mode and then selecting Last Known Good Configuration. This will boot the computer with the last settings that worked correctly.
You can also try booting into Safe Mode and doing a System Restore and go back to a point where you were not having any problems.
Another thing to try in Safe Mode is to check your startup items and uncheck anything that's not needed or looks like it doesn't belong.
Finally you can try a repair installation of Windows which will reinstall Windows and leave your programs and files intact. Make sure to backup your data if you can just in case something doesn't go right. You may need an actual XP disk to do this instead of your recovery CD.
If you have a recovery CD you would put it in the drive and make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the CD first.
As a test you can just restart your computer with the recovery CD in the drive and see if it reads it. Keep in mind that by using the recovery CD it will wipe out the computer and put it back to the state it was in when you bought it.
