Virus Questions and Answers - Unable to Delete Virus From Computer

Fran writes in with a virus question.
Q. I have AVG free anti-virus on my computer.  It found the agent.av virus on my computer and moved it to the virus vault.  It was in the temporary internet folder.  I was searching on something medical and when I clicked a link, a pornographic site popped up and then AVG caught the virus.  I updated the virus scan and did a full system scan.  It did not find anything.  I also ran AdAware, and it did not find anything. It seemed that the virus had been removed.  I deleted all the temporary internet files before I ran the scans. When I tried to put my computer on stand-by, it would not go into stand-by mode.  I found a V.exe file located in my C:\\temp directory and every time I reboot my computer it begins running.  When I click ctrl alt delete, I see the program in the list of processes running and it will allow me to close the program, but it comes back each time I reboot.  If I try to delete the file from the temp directory, it won't let me and tells me that Windows is using the file.  I've searched everywhere on the net and can't find how to delete this program from my computer.  If there is a value in the registry, I'm not sure what it is to be able to delete it.  Please help!  Thank You!

A. I would check your startup items using msconfig and see if it is listed there. Check the Startup and Services tabs and if you see a reference to it then uncheck it. This will stop it from starting with your computer. Then start the computer in Safe Mode and find the file and delete it. Hopefully it won’t try to restart itself before you can delete it.

You can also check task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+del and see if it is running in the applications or processes tab and then end the task and then delete the file.
