Windows Questions and Answers - Missing the BROWSEUI.dll file

Ryan writes in with a Windows question:
Q. My computer is missing the file BROWSEUI.dll and I have no taskbar or start menu, only the task manager can access programs. I don’t have the backup/recovery CD, windows XP CD and the system restore doesn't work, please send back a solution.

A. Lets start by seeing if we can replace the Browseui.dll file. It goes in your C:\Windows\System32 folder. Copy the attached Browseui.dll file to your desktop, unzip it and see if you can copy it there and overwrite the other one. If it wont let you copy it because its in use then you can try to boot in safe mode and try it again.

Since this file is used by Internet Explorer you can try this as well.

Do this at your own risk because overwriting system files may further damage your system.
