Ben writes in with a Windows question:
Q. I got an IBM ThinkPad laptop. When i start it up it runs some checks then it says this version of windows only runs on ms-dos 8.00.what can I do here?
A. Did you or someone else possibly try and upgrade to Windows ME on this computer? If so and it wasn't successful you may receive that message. Does it even start up at all? MS-DOS 8.0 is generally used for Windows ME
One thing you can try is to reboot from the Windows 98 startup floppy disk. When prompted, select Minimal Boot. At the command prompt, type sys c: and press ENTER. If you receive a System Transferred message, your computer may then boot up.
If you are stuck at a command prompt you can try typing exit /b to see if it lets you get past it.
You can also do a reinstall of Windows 98 if you have the CD. A reinstall should not change your programs or documents but do this at your own risk because there is always a chance that this or any of the other suggestions can make things worse.
