Windows Questions and Answers - Hidden Breifcase Question

Amy writes in with a Windows question:
Q. I want to keep a briefcase on my desktop as hidden. But when I do that it disappears...(which is what I wanted) But how do I find it when I need it?

A. If you have the "Do not show hidden files and folders" button marked then it will hide any hidden files from viewing. If you open My Computer and then go to Tools, Folder Options and then the View tab you will see a radio button that you can mark that says "Show hidden files and folders". This will allow you to view your hidden briefcase.

Hidden files are mainly used by programs and Windows to hide important files that you will most likely not need to access. So every time you set your briefcase to hidden it disappears because you have the Do not show hidden files and folders button marked. Technically you can change the option back and forth if you want to hide it that way.

Another way to keep your briefcase hidden you can store it in My Documents and have any other users of your computer log on with a different user account. There is an option in the users section under Control Panel where you can prevent other users from accessing your files under My Documents.

Another alternative is to purchase third party software that can give you the ability to password protect your files.
