Windows Questions and Answers - Critical System Error Messages

Bob writes in with a Windows question:
Q. I keep having a box come up saying from security alert. Critical systems error and it tells me to go to a site and download a registry scan. I have a registry scan and I used it 3 or 4 times in the past then had problems with my computer. I still have the full version of the registry scanner and fixer but am afraid to use it. Any suggestions? Will it get rid of things that I need for the computer to operate if I use the scan and click fix when it is done?

A. Registry problems can be difficult to diagnose. Some of those registry scanners can make problems worse instead of better. I would suggest trying to do a System Restore to a point before you started having the problem.

A handy software program you can also try is called CCleaner. It will do a registry scan and other types of scans to clean out leftover registry entries and other files. Make sure to back up your registry before using though.
