Windows Questions and Answers - Cannot Boot From Windows CD

Greg writes in with a Windows question:
Q. My windows XP pro crashed.  I could not even get into safe mode.  So I formatted the hard drive to start all over again.  Well now my computer will only boot up to an old startup disk.  So all I get is dos.  My cd-rom will not boot up now.  And when I type: (setup.exe.)  The prompt comes up as Can not run this program in dos mode.  I would appreciate it if someone could give me some pointers on how to get my system up and running again.  Thank you.

A. If you are trying to reinstall Windows XP then you do not use setup.exe, you will use winnt.exe. Are you using XP boot floppies or some other type of boot disks like Windows 98? Go into your BIOS and make sure the computer is set to boot from the CDROM first.
