Windows Questions and Answers - Missing Desktop Icons

Joseph writes in with a Windows question:
Q: My icons on the desktop are gone. What can I do to bring them back?

A. If you deleted your Windows icons I would look first in the Recycle Bin. If you deleted the Recycle Bin you can right click on Start and pick Explore. From there check and see if you can see the Recycle Bin icon. If so open it up and find your icons. Then right click on them and pick restore.

If you don't have a Recycle Bin icon then right click on your desktop and click Properties. Go to the Desktop tab and click on Customize Desktop. Make sure all the Desktop icons are checked that you want to display on your desktop and click Ok. You shouldn't be able to delete the Recycle Bin that easily.

If your icons for your programs are not in the Recycle Bin then can click on Start and pick Programs or All Programs and drag the needed icons to the desktop. There are 2 ways to do this. If you drag with the left button it will move the icon off of your start menu and on to the desktop. Or you click and drag with the right mouse button, then when you let go of the button after dragging the icon to the desktop click on Copy Here. This will copy the icon from your start menu instead of moving it.
