Windows Questions and Answers - Internet Files Won't Download

Theresa writes in with a Windows question.
Q. Whenever I try to download anything from the internet the box with the piece of paper comes up but there are no numbers to be seen.

A. It sounds like you may have a possible spyware infection on your computer blocking your downloads. I would first run any spyware software you have to see if you can clean it up. Make sure you update them as well before running. If you do not have any check out our spyware page for downloads. Of course you will have to download them from another computer and then install them on yours.

You can also try right clicking on the download link and selecting Save target as to see if it makes a difference.

Another test is to start your computer in Safe Mode with networking support and try downloading again. This is assuming you are using DSL or cable internet access.

There is a program called IEfix that fixes issues with Internet Explorer. You can download and run the program to see if it makes a difference.

Finally you can install the Firefox web browser and see if that makes a difference. Firefox is less susceptible to spyware than Internet Explorer
