Windows Questions and Answers - Trouble Accessing and Moving Files

Zach writes in with a Windows question
Q. Hi currently I have been having troubles accessing and moving files and folders.  When I try to access a folder it says ".....is not accessible access is denied. I honestly cannot stand it any more if i can get help it would greatly be appreciated.

A. I would start by making sure you have permissions on those files. Check your user account under Users in control panel to make sure you are an Administrator on the computer. You can also do a test by logging on as a different user if you have more than one and see if you can move the files. If you are not an administrator you can log in as the administrator and make your user account part of the administrators group.

Also make sure the files are not in use when trying to move them. If you have an open document for example you usually can copy it but not move it until its closed.

Next you can see if you are the owner of the files you are trying to move. Right click one of the files and select Properties. Then click on the Security tab then the Advanced button. Next click on the Owner tab and see if your user account is the owner. If not, see if you can take ownership of the files. While you are in the security section, check your permissions on the file and make sure you have the Modify permission checked.
