Umair writes in with a Windows question
Q: I don’t know Windows XP is? Please tell me what is Windows XP?
A: Windows XP is what is known as an operating system. It is the software your computer uses to run programs and open files etc. There are several versions of Windows such as 3.1, 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, 2003 and the new upcoming Vista.
Windows is not the only operating system available although it is the most popular. There are other operating systems such as Macintosh OS X and various versions of Linux etc. The operating system is installed on the hard drive which is inside your computer. The hard drive stores the files and other information that comprise the operating system.
Without an operating system you computer doesn't really have a purpose. Think of it as a car without an engine. It will basically sit there and do nothing.
