Sue writes in with a Windows question
Q. When I try to get my computer to defrag, it only gets to 1% and never finishes. What can I do to get it to defrag?
A. With Windows 95/98/ME the defrag program is very sensitive to what is going on in the background when your computer is running. I have seen it where it will keep starting over if there is any kind of activity going on with the computer. I would first make sure there is nothing running in the background by checking your startup items and rebooting.
You may also want to close all non essential processes that are running before trying to defrag using Task Manager.
Another good idea is to run a Scandisk before the Defrag. If there are errors on your drive then Defrag won’t be able to defragment the drive. Scandisk may also tell you if you are having problems with the drive.
You can also try some third party software like Diskeeper which does a better job of defragmenting than the built in Windows defragger.
