Windows Questions and Answers - Deleting Internet History

John writes in with a Windows question
Q
. Hi I have a problem. I would like to but don't know how to delete previous sites people visited so you can't see the sites anymore. How do you delete individually certain inappropriate sites you don't want showing or would you have to clear the whole history? Could you help me with this? The same with Google word searches. I also need to erase some of those. do you know what I mean? I'm pretty sure it gets done, but I don't know how to do it. Could you suggest what I should do?

Answer: If you go into your IE history by clicking on the yellow star on the left side of the toolbar you will see your history. If you then click on the drop down arrow next to history you can sort by date or most visited etc. From there you can delete individual history items.

As for typed search URLs there is not much you can do except delete them all. If you feel comfortable editing the registry you can clear specific addresses that way. Keep in mind that if you delete something you shouldn't in the registry there is no going back and you may damage your computer. It’s a good idea to make a backup first. Click on Start, Run, and type in regedit and click Ok. Then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs and delete any of the addresses you want on the right hand side.

For your saved Google searches you can clear all of the history by doing the following.

For Internet Explorer 6

1 Click on Tools then Internet Options
2 Click on the Content tab
3 Click AutoComplete in the Personal Information section
4 Click on Clear Forms to clear the current history
5 If you want to disable AutoComplete make sure you uncheck Forms

For Internet Explorer 7 & 8

1 Click on Tools then Internet Options
2 Click on General tab
3 Click on Delete in the Browsing History section
4 Click on Delete forms

For Firefox

1 Click on Tools then Clear recent history
2 Choose how much history you want to clear
3 Choose what type of items you want to clear
4 Click on Clear Now

To disable Internet Explorer 7 from keeping the history of your Google searches you can go to Tools, Internet Options and then click the Content tab. Then click on Settings under Auto Complete. Then uncheck the Forms box and click Ok.

If you are using Firefox for your web browser you have some nice options to delete the types of things you are looking to delete. Go to Tools, Options, Privacy and click on Private Data and you can choose what information you want Firefox to keep. There is also a feature in Firefox where you can bring up recent URLs from the address bar or Google searches, hold the mouse over them so they are highlighted and then press the delete key and remove the individual item.
