Since broadband offers instant access to email, work, video chats and online data storage sites, people are becoming increasingly reliant on its presence in their lives. As a result, it can be extremely exasperating and stressful when you encounter problems that interfere with your ability to use broadband effectively. Thankfully, there are certain precautions you can take in order to reduce your likelihood of encountering some of the most widespread broadband problems, and there are also some straightforward ways of addressing the most common reasons for a failed broadband connection.

1) Reduce the chances of an unreliable connection by choosing the right provider:
When you are researching broadband connections, make sure that you compare the reviews of different Internet Service Providers (or ISPs). Although there will be small lapses in service with all available ISPs, choosing one with an excellent reputation makes it far less likely that you will encounter regular problems with your broadband connection. When you are looking into the track records of ISPs, it is also important to take the time to investigate the services that ISPs provide when broadband problems do occur. You want to receive your broadband connection from a provider that offers reliable, friendly support when an Internet crisis befalls its customers.

2) Protect your computer from viruses and malware:
Malicious viruses and malware programs commonly cause broadband difficulties, but if you do not install any protective software then you will not even know that they have infected your machine. In order to protect your computer and your connection from these troublesome intruders, make sure that you acquire one of the latest pieces of anti-virus software. Some particularly popular choices include AVG, Norton and Kaspersky.

3) Look for simple solutions to problems with your broadband connection:
If you cannot connect to the Internet, do not panic! Instead, start by taking some easy steps to explore solutions to some of the most common reasons for a failed broadband connection. Begin by checking that all the necessary wires are properly connected to all the devices that are necessary for your connection. Next, unplug your router, modem or hub and plug it back in after thirty seconds or so. In many cases, this reboot will be enough to solve your connection problem. If you are still struggling to access the Internet, visit the setup page for your connection and perform a connectivity test. If you do not know how to do this, there is another way to check the status of your connection. Specifically, if you are running a Windows operating system, you can also check (and sometimes even fix) your connection by going to the Network and Sharing Center. Finally, if you are using an ADSL connection then you should check that your phone line is functioning correctly. If there is a problem with your phone line (such as a high-pitched noise, static or an inability to make phone calls), contact your service provider for advice. If none of these steps solves your problem, call your ISP's technical support line and carefully describe every last detail of your situation until a solution is found.

4) Always have a backup internet connection:
In rare cases, broadband problems will turn out to be extremely difficult to resolve or it will become obvious that fixing the connection will take a very long time. In order to be prepared for such eventualities, you can invest in a backup way to connect to the Internet so that you are never simply cut off from your emails, work and important contacts. One of the best examples is mobile broadband, which involves purchasing a USB device that you can insert into your computer. Alternatively, venturing out to local coffee shops will quickly lead to finding a wireless hotspot that can be used to provide a broadband connection if you are using a laptop. Finally, remember that even an old dial up connection might turn out to be useful in an emergency.
